Huntsville has draws for many industries. It’s home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Redstone Arsenal, and a broad array of tech companies and fresh start-ups. And another high-profile organization will soon be joining the ranks: the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Here’s the inside scoop on the FBI’s $1 Billion Huntsville campus.
The FBI’s HQ 2
At least internally, Huntsville is being billed as headquarters number two. The city’s current infrastructure, and well-established, tech-savvy network, attracted the bureau to build a more substantial foothold in the metro area. The FBI’s roots in Huntsville reach all the way back to the 1970s. However, this project will be their most substantial undertaking in the area to date.
The FBI’s $1 Billion Huntsville campus will cover 1,600 acres—for a total of six buildings. Three of the six buildings are already under construction. The FBI’s new operation in Huntsville is seen as a boon to the area, especially concerning jobs. Huntsville will draw around 1,400 FBI employees from D.C. However, even that number won’t fill all the positions needed. Some estimates suggest that 4,000-plus jobs will be created over the next 10 years. And many of those could be completely new hires.
Huntsville as a Tech Hub
Huntsville’s prestige comes in part because of its heavy concentration of highly skilled personnel, namely engineers. The up-and-coming national seat for space exploration boasts a strong STEM knowledgebase, scores of space and defense companies, and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.
The FBI’s $1 Billion Huntsville campus will be one of many satellite stations used by the FBI; however, it will carry the lion’s share of employees and means for innovation. Ballistics and explosives training will be one of the on-site operations fielded by the Huntsville campus. The first phase of construction is expected to be completed in 2021
Summary
It’s an exciting time to be a resident of Huntsville. A hub for multiple sectors of information technology and beyond, Huntsville will continue to bring in jobs and be a boon to the state.
